According to the song by Don McClean, 75 years ago today music was born. Happy 75th Birthday to Buddy Holly!! He is a lot is things to my family, friends, and the community of Clear Lake, IA. As much as I hate to say it, his death (in a plane crash along with JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Ritchie Valens, along with pilot Richard Peterson, on Feb. 3rd, 1959 following their final concert performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA) has made many businesses in Clear Lake thrive, mainly the Surf Ballroom which was designated as a ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ destination in 2009, signifying the 50th Anniversary of the concert and plane crash. Since then, in my 25 years, I have witnessed many outstanding concerts at the Surf (including country artists Randy Travis and Clint Black, rock artists Bret Michaels and Alice Cooper, and groups Styx, Hootie & the Blowfish, and the Eagles to name a few). So to JP, Ritchie, and of course the ‘birthday boy’ Buddy, Thank You for your lyrical words, dedication, heart, inspiration, and love of music, but above all, your lives!! “That’ll Be The Day”… the music lives on!!
